On Tuesday afternoon, July 8, the container ship Flinterland left the port of Saint Petersburg for French Guiana, carrying Russian-built equipment for the new Soyuz launch complex at the Guiana Space Center (CSG).

A total of 160 containers were loaded on the Flinterland, from the Samara Space Center, as well as KBOM and NPO Lavotchkine, the main Russian companies participating in the program to launch Soyuz rockets from the Guiana Space Center. The trip from Saint Petersburg to Cayenne, French Guiana will take about 16 days.

Equipment carried on the ship includes the service cabin, a major system providing access to the Soyuz launcher on its launch pad, as well as various infrastructure items needed for the operation of Soyuz and its Fregat upper stage.

“This shipment shows that Russian space companies have met their commitments,” said a delighted Anatoly Perminov, head of Russian space agency Roscosmos. “Two more shipments will follow, carrying other infrastructure parts. Russian specialists will be flying to French Guiana this month to meet the Flinterland, and they will be installing the equipment in conjunction with their European partners.”

“The shipment of this Russian-built equipment to French Guiana marks a major milestone in the program for Soyuz launches from the Guiana Space Center,” said Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman and CEO of Arianespace. “By adding Soyuz launches, the Arianespace family will offer a medium launcher with unrivaled reliability, and we have already signed several contracts for this launcher.”
