French space agency CNES, contracting authority for technical facilities at the Guiana Space Center (CSG) in French Guiana, and Arianespace, industrial prime contractor for launch operations, have signed industry contracts that will take effect on January 1, 2012.

These contracts are designed to ensure synergies between all operations at CSG for the three launch vehicles operated from this site, Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega.

CNES is in the process of awarding 14 contracts, while Arianespace signed 16 contracts on December 21 at its corporate headquarters in Evry, near Paris. All of these contracts represent a total of €700 million over the next five years, and account for 900 jobs at the Guiana Space Center.

The companies concerned are: Air Liquide, APCO, Axima, Bureau Veritas, Cegelec, Clemessy, Endel, ESQS, ETCA, GTD, IEC, MT Aerospace, Pena, Peyrani, RMT, Serco, Seris, SGDE, Snecma, Sodexo, Telespazio and Vitrociset. “This reorganization is a perfect illustration of our business development strategy, based on synergies between the complementary launch systems for Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega,” said Arianespace Chairman and CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall. “It allows us to leverage effects of scale, and share fixed costs between our three launch systems. We are very satisfied with the outcome, because this type of improvement perfectly reflects our commitments to the European Space Agencies, its member-States and our shareholders.” Joël Barre, Director of CSG/CNES, pointed out that these new contracts aim to meet several objectives, namely to maintain the space center’s availability and security, reduce operating and maintenance costs, foster greater involvement by the industries in ESA member-States, and maintain social solidarity at CSG.
