Arianespace to launch Corot satellite

France's CNES space agency has awarded Arianespace a launch contract for the Corot astronomical satellite, which will be orbited in mid-2006 from Baikonur Cosmodrome on the Soyuz 2-1b launch vehicle's maiden flight.

Corot will be an extremely capable space observatory, and is designed to study stars and search for new planets. Weighing 630 kg. at launch, the satellite will be the payload for the initial mission of Soyuz 2-1b – the Soyuz version that subsequently is to be operated from the Guiana Space Center (CSG). This launch is part of the Guiana Space Center’s Soyuz program, and it will be executed under the responsibility of Arianespace. For the mission’s launch operations, Arianespace will draw on the expertise of Starsem – which has performed commercial Soyuz flights from Baikonur Cosmodrome.

Corot, a world’s first in astronomy

This scientific mission will mark a new milestone in astronomy by carrying out two missions: the study of internal structure of stars, and the detection of plants outside our solar system.
Corot uses the Proteus multimission platform built by Alcatel Space. The satellite will be placed into a polar orbit at an altitude of 850 kilometers.
