With the 25th Africa-France Summit getting under way, Arianespace takes this opportunity to review its contribution to the development of satellite coverage in Africa over the past three decades.

Arianespace has launched satellites for major international operators and participated in innovative projects by regional African operators.

Operating both Ariane 5 and Soyuz from the Guiana Space Center, Arianespace will launch satellites in the coming months that contribute to the development in Africa of Internet access, mobile telephony, television broadcasting and meteorological data.

On June 23 Arianespace is scheduled to launch Arabsat 5A, the sixth Arabsat satellite to have chosen an Arianespace launch, further bolstering this operator’s service offering in Africa.

The following launch, several weeks later, will orbit two pan-African satellites, Rascom-QAF 1R and Nilesat 201, which will provide telecommunications, national long-distance and international links, direct TV broadcast and Internet access services.

Looking further ahead, Arianespace will also launch the Intelsat New Dawn satellite, and the eight satellites in the O3B constellation, which will offer a wide range of services (telephony, media applications, data networks), in particular broadband Internet connections spanning the entire African continent.

Arianespace Chairman and CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall participated in a panel discussion on boosting the competitiveness of African companies, stating: “We are very proud to have launched several satellites for Africa over the last 30 years, and to have played a role in the development of telecommunications in this fast-growing market.”
