During industry landmark event Satellite 2011, taking place from Monday, March 14 to Thursday, March 17, in Washington, D.C., Arianespace reaffirms its position as the leading commercial launch services provider for the world’s leading satellite manufacturers and operators.

This eminent standing has been acknowledged by the Society for Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) who inducted into their Hall of Fame, Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman and CEO of Arianespace.

No. 1 worldwide

Since its founding, Arianespace has signed more than 300 launch contracts and has launched 290 satellites for 78 different customers, accounting for more than half of all commercial satellites now in service worldwide.

Drawing on a complete range of launch vehicles, with proven reliability and availability, Arianespace wins more than half of the commercial launch contracts open to competitive bidding on the international market every year. This gives it a very healthy backlog of orders, currently numbering 26 customers.

Arianespace’s backlog now stands at more than 4 billion euros, including 30 satellites to be launched by Ariane 5 into geostationary orbit, five Ariane 5 launches for the ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle) cargo vessel for the International Space Station, and 18 dedicated Soyuz launches.

Pace-setting technical performance

On February 16 Arianespace successfully launched the European Space Agency’s Johannes Kepler ATV-2, marking the 200th Ariane launch and the 42nd successful launch in a row for Ariane 5. The ATV-2 mission once again demonstrated the operational capabilities of Ariane 5, ranging from commercial launches into geostationary orbit to dedicated launches into special orbits.

2011: service entry of the Arianespace family

Arianespace will meet new challenges in 2011 as the complete European family of launch vehicles enters service, enabling it to launch all types of satellites for all customers.

Ariane 5: at least five more launches scheduled this year. The upcoming launch is slated for March 30, carrying two communications satellites, Yahsat 1A and Intelsat New Dawn.

Soyuz: Arianespace will begin operating the Soyuz launch complex in April, and plans to carry out at least two Soyuz launches during the year from the Guiana Space Center. At the same time, Arianespace plans three Soyuz launches in 2011 from the Cosmodrome in Baikonur, Kazakhstan.

Vega: Arianespace will take over responsibility for Vega launch facilities at the end of June, then carry out the first Vega launch during the second half of the year.

Arianespace plans a total of 12 launches in 2011.

Arianespace honored

Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chairman and CEO of Arianespace, was named to the Society for Satellite Professionals International’s Hall of Fame on March 15 in Washington, D.C., in recognition of his decisive role in the growth of the satellite communications industry. Previous recipients of this distinction include Arthur C. Clarke, writer and visionary, and Eddie Hartenstein, founder of DirecTV.
