Participating in this week’s Satellite 2010 conference in the Washington, D.C. area, Arianespace is underscoring its leadership position as the commercial launch services provider of reference for the world’s major satellite manufacturers and operators.

30 years of success

As the leading Service & Solutions company, Arianespace is one of the main partners in this international space industry event, which brings together more than 9 000 participants from around the world. Arianespace, which is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary, continues to confirm its world leadership. Since its founding, Arianespace has signed more than 300 launch Service & Solutions contracts – including four new contracts already signed in 2010 – and has launched 277 satellites for 76 customers, accounting for more than half of all commercial satellites now in service.

A technical performance

With 35 successful launches in a row since 2003, Ariane 5 has largely proven its technical maturity and demonstrated its operational capabilities. Arianespace set a new record for the Ariane 5 in 2009, with seven launches during a calendar year. These missions orbited nine commercial satellites, along with three European institutional payloads. This pace will continue in 2010. Moreover, Ariane 5 will be joined by Vega and Soyuz at the Guiana Space Center.

A record breaking backlog

Capitalizing on its range of launchers, Arianespace has won more than half of the commercial launch contracts open to competition worldwide in the last two years. This gives it a very healthy order book comprising contracts from 29 customers.

With 33 satellites to be launched into geostationary transfer orbit using Ariane 5, 6 government launches by Ariane 5 for the ATV cargo vessel, 17 dedicated Soyuz launches, Arianespace today has a record-breaking backlog worth 4.3 billion Euros.

Expanding the launcher family in 2010

Arianespace is planning seven Ariane 5 launches in 2010, including the second ATV supply vessel for the International Space Station, the “Johannes Kepler”. The first launch of the year is slated for March 24 and will loft the ASTRA 3B and COMSATBw-2 satellites.

The first launch of a Soyuz rocket from the Guiana Space Center is slated for the second half of 2010. Integration of the mobile gantry started in November, and system tests are about to begin. To date, Arianespace has ordered 14 launchers from the Russian space industry. All of these launches have been sold. The first two Soyuz launchers are already in French Guiana.

Also in 2010, Arianespace will perform with Starsem one or two Soyuz launches from Baikonur for the Globalstar 2 constellation.

For the Vega program, the refurbishment of the ELA-1 launch pad is nearly completed. Each of the three solid propulsion stages of this launcher has passed static firing tests. The development of the Vega launcher will be completed in 2010, with commercial launch services kicking off in 2011.
