Arianespace at Satellite 2009

Founded in 1980, Arianespace was the world’s first commercial launch service company. At Satellite 2009, it confirms its position as the world’s leading launch Service & Solutions provider.

Arianespace continues to set the pace

From Satellite 2008 to Satellite 2009, Arianespace carried out seven Ariane 5 and one Soyuz launch, successfully orbiting 13 geostationary satellites and the first Jules Verne ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle) to the International Space Station. Over this period it lofted nearly 65,000 kg into orbit.

With 29 successful launches in a row, Ariane 5 has amply confirmed its technical maturity. Ariane 5 is the only commercial launcher in service today capable of simultaneously launching two payloads, while delivering outstanding performance, flexibility and competitiveness to all Arianespace customers.

2008: “Year of Ariane”

Since being created in 1980, Arianespace has won over 300 launch Service & Solutions contracts. Arianespace has launched 267 satellites for 72 customers, accounting for more than half of the commercial satellites now in service worldwide.

Despite the global economic crisis, Arianespace logged remarkable commercial performance during the year, winning 13 contracts out of a total of 18 open to competition, and consolidating its world leadership. Furthermore, Arianespace was chosen to launch the entire Galileo constellation.

2009: “Year of the Arianespace family”

Since the beginning of the year, Arianespace has already won 5 new launch contracts, for Hispasat 1E, Arabsat 5C & Badr 7, Yamal 401 & 402.

By offering a family of reliable, available launchers, Arianespace has signed more than half of the commercial launch contracts open to competition in the world market over the last two years. Today, Arianespace has the largest order book in the industry:

  • 30 satellites to be launched into geostationary transfer orbit, using Ariane 5 or Soyuz for the smaller spacecraft,
  • 8 government launches by Ariane 5, including 6 ATV launches,
  • 7 dedicated Soyuz launches.

Continued leadership

On January 30, Arianespace signed a contract with EADS-Astrium for the production of 35 Ariane 5 ECA launchers (the PB batch).

This contract confirms the commitment of Arianespace and the entire European space industry to ensuring the long-term availability, reliability and competitiveness of Ariane 5. It will guarantee independent access to space for Europe, while giving Arianespace customers the best launch Service & Solutions in the world.

In addition to the 4 Soyuz launchers already on order, a new batch of 10 launchers was ordered, so that operations from the Guiana Space Centre could start with sufficient resources to meet market requirements.

Increased launch rate

In 2009 Arianespace plans to carry out 7 or 8 Ariane 5 launches (including the successful launch on February 12), along with the first Soyuz launch at the Guiana Space Center.

In just a few weeks, Arianespace will launch the Herschel space telescope and the Planck scientific observatory, followed shortly by the launch of TerreStar-1, the largest commercial communications satellite ever built.

Soyuz and Vega at the Guiana Space Centre

Civil engineering work on the Soyuz launch pad at the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana has been completed, and the Russian-built infrastructure components are now being installed by Russian personnel. These operations are proceeding on schedule.

The refurbishment of the ELA-1 launch pad for the Vega light launcher is nearly finished, with initial tests of the mobile gantry. Vega is slated to start commercial service from the Guiana Space Center in 2010.
